Conversations About Colorectal Cancer—Saturday, April 5, 8 a.m.–2 p.m.
Held offsite at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, this seminar
will feature several doctors specializing in colorectal cancer. Doctors

Special Presentations for Breast Networking Group—Saturday, April 5 & May 3, 1–3 p.m.

On April 5, Renata Beaman, PT, MS, MA and ASTYM Certified Physical Therapist will demonstrate gentle exercises and discuss ways physical therapy can help treat lymphedema.

On May 3, Story From a Survivor—Beverly Mahaffey, LPC, 20-year breast cancer survivor, will share strategies that helped her get through treatment as well as her perspective now, including changes she has made since getting her cancer diagnosis.

Our Monday, May 5 presentation will be a “women’s only” event held off-site at the Fresh Start Women's Foundation, 1130 E. McDowell Road. Dr. Bodour Salhia, PhD, researcher from Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), will be available for an informal Q & A discussion on current research and treatments in cancer. Dr. Salhia is on the front line of cancer research and can answer a range of questions about research designed to improve all cancer care.

Special Presentation for the Carcinoid Networking Group—Saturday, April 12, 1–3 p.m.

Dr. Andrew Leiter, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine at Tufts University, will talk about research in the field of Neuroendocrinology. His work has focused on identifying the origin of gastrointestinal endocrine cells that develop into carcinoid tumors. He will highlight the importance of research and what supporting scientific understanding of carcinoid cancer will achieve for patients. This presentation is made possible by the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation.

Ask the Nurse about Fertility Issues—Thursday, April 17, 6–7:30 p.m.

Wes Foster, RN, Senior Clinical Manager for the Banner Thunderbird Medical Center will discuss issues related to cancer treatment and fertility. He will discuss the things you need to know before, during and after treatment in relation to fertility. Plenty of time available for questions after the

How To Talk To Your Kids About Cancer—Tuesday, May 6, 6–8 p.m.

Carole Foster-Pitts, MSW, LPC, facilitator at TWC, will discuss children’s developmental stages and how it relates to telling kids about the diagnosis of cancer and the nature of the disease. Strategies for empowering children and protecting their need for normalcy will be highlighted. RSVP.

How to be an Effective Caregiver—Friday, May 9, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

Program will be held at the Foundation for Senior Living at 1201 East Thomas Road. This program will be broken into 3 phases: 1) instruction on how to prepare healthy meals quickly; 2) adapting your house to better accommodate a caregiver’s ability to assist in areas of bathing, toileting, and getting into and out of bed; 3) 30-minute relaxation and visualization exercise designed to teach caregivers an easy way to reduce stress. Breast Cancer Presentation—Thursday, May 29, 6–8 p.m.

Program will be held off-site at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, 5555 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale. Brenda Moorthy, DO, will present on diagnosis and breast cancer from a surgeon’s perspective. Dr. Moorthy practices Oncoplastic breast surgery which combines sound oncology principles with plastic surgery techniques to achieve complete removal of the breast tumor, obtain wider surgical margins, minimize the risk of recurrence while still providing the best possible
cosmetic results. RSVP
