Colon Cancer Survivor Launches First Colorectal Support Group

Surviving colorectal cancer has given Betty Rose DeCarlo a new mission. It was at a routine colonoscopy that Betty was diagnosed. Her two-year fight through chemo, radiation and surgery was a tough road. Today, she is in recovery and happy to be alive. After her diagnosis, Betty began looking for a colorectal support group. Her search led her to The Wellness Community (TWC). Here she found hope and support in a Monday group with survivors representing all different types of cancers. Betty’s needs were met through camaraderie and expertise each Monday. Each cancer
survivor’s experience provided resources, education, understanding or humor that eased the journey. Still, Betty had a purpose. Her experience had shown her firsthand how hard it was to find groups willing to talk specifically about her type of cancer. She was dedicated to helping others not experience the same isolation she felt. Betty learned about a national organization, The Colon Cancer Alliance. She attended their national convention and shortly after, volunteered to represent the alliance locally as the Voices of Phoenix Coordinator. Betty has passionately embraced this opportunity. This was her hope for the Valley. Betty’s mission is becoming a dream come true. With the collaboration of The Wellness Community, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and Elizabeth J. McConnell, M.D., on April 28, Betty is bringing the Conversations
About Colorectal Cancer program to Phoenix. And, in May, the Valley’s first colorectal support group will begin at TWC. See inside for more detail on The Colon Cancer Alliance, the Conversations About Colorectal Cancer event and the upcoming support group.
